National Book Week 2015

NBW_Revised-01

South Africa commemorates National Book Week in September. It is an initiative of the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.

Reading statistics reports that only 14% of the South African population are active book readers, and a mere 5% of parents read to their children. National Book Week is an important initiative in encouraging the nation to value reading as a fun and pleasurable activity and to showcase how reading can easily be incorporated into one’s daily lifestyle.

The commemoration coincides with International Literacy Day on 8 September

Most towns have libraries where ratepayers can lend books.THE COUNTDOWN to National Book Week has begun. On the 7th of September,  going places tour bus begins to spread the love of reading.

Official events will be held in seven provinces: Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape, Limpopo, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Activities include distributing books, reading stories, word games, motivational talks, and interaction with children favorite mascot Funda Bala.

The programmes cater for children aged 2 and up. There’s also something for the adults: training to encourage parents and guardians to be reading champions in their homes. Some of the events are open to the public. Check more information on that using #BuyaBook hashtag on social media. Of course, National Book Week also encourage you to host your own reading events from the 7th to the 13th of September, and to #BuyaBook for someone who doesn’t have one.

Join the conversation and support  leisure book reading using 2015 theme #BuyaBook #GoingPlaces
